PREPARING for a flood
Barriers
The construction of permanent barriers helps protect communities from future floods. Dams and levees are made of high cement walls that keep flood waters safely at the bay. Both are expensive, but help greatly. Dams contain huge reservoirs of water which help generate strong electricity, supply drinking water, and supply farmlands with water. A spillway is a structure that is built fairly close to a dam and used to channel water downstream. The spillway is mainly used to prevent water from spilling over the dam walls by maintaining a constant water level.
Another example of barriers are flood wall's and flood way's Flood ways are large strips of land along a river that is left bare. Homes are not built in flood ways, so that if a flood does happen to occur, the water cannot cause damage to buildings in the low-lying floodplain. Moreover a flood wall is a barrier in the banks of a river. These walls are used to prevent the waters of a river from spilling into the city's or towns. Also a dike is along wall built at the edge of a river or lake to protect the land from the rivers over flowing water. People usually use things like sandbags, or mud walls to block the edge of the river.
Learning to Adapt
In some countries there are seasonal monsoon's, meaning floods twice a year. For example in china and India farmers built mud walls to protect their crops.
When a flood strikes
Monsoons happen 2 times a year in certain climate, so people who live in those areas are usually prepared. Unlike those floods other types of floods can happen anywhere at any moment. But if you are not prepared out need to evacuate there are places on the news reports that you can go. Also, you should turn off all electricity so that the floodwater's do not become charged. In addition people usually try to prevent the flood from intruding with fast, easy dikes. Moreover you should be prepared with blankets, bottled water, extra clothing, non-perishable food, can opener, batteries, rain gear and a map of the area. You should also plan an escape route in cause you are trapped. It is also important to get high up so the flood cannot reach you. For example, your attic.
Warning Signs
Back in ancient times scientists relied upon the positions of the shining stars and planets to predict what the weather would be like. Today meteorologists and or scientists that study weather, use many scientific instruments to determine where floods are most likely to occur months in advance. An example of a scientific instrument is a flood gauge. Flood gauges are used to measure the crest of floods. Each segment on the gauge measure 1 foot and as a rivers floodwater's rise scientists can tell how large of an area will become flooded.
