Monsoon floods occur very regularly in Bangladesh. There are both the summer monsoons and winter monsoons. In 1988, the summer monsoon arrived earlier than expected and the people were no where near prepared when the rivers overflowed flooding killed approximately 1,600 people and left almost 25 million people without homes. Business and storefronts in the cities were terribly washed away. Also, in the countryside, the floodwater's destroyed many crops.
