Types of Floods
Areal Coastal
Areal floods are floods that can occur if water Caused by severe storms, or as a result of
accumulates across an impermeable surface another hazard.
(eg. from rainfall) and cannot rapidly dissipate. Catastrophic
Flash Flooding Caused by a significant ad unexpected event,
A series of storms moving of the same area ex. dam breakage, or as a result of another
can cause flash flooding. disaster.
Muddy Flood Human-induced
A muddy flood is a hill slope process, and Accidental damage by workmen to tunnels or
confusion with mud flows produced with mass pipes.
movements should be avoided. Monsoon floods (Seasonal floods)
Riverine A monsoon is an enormous air mass that
Ice and debris such as trees or leaves, blows in only one direction during winter,
can block a river and prevent it from making the land hot and dry then shifts in
flowing along its natural corse often causing the opposite direction during summer
significant damage. bringing heavy rains.
Slow kinds include rainfall washing down mountains
and overflowing in the valley below.
Fast kinds include river flash floods resulting from
high precipitation.
Esturaine
Commonly caused by a combination of sea tidal
surges caused by storm force winds and high river
stages due to heavy rain.
Where will it happen next?
We predict that a flood will next happen in China because we believe China has the most, worst and deadliest floods in the world. For example, In 1887 at the Hwang Ho River, from the months September to October there was a flood, over 900,000 people were killed. Another flood in China was the 1939 North China flood that killed about 500,000 people. Also, there was a flood in 1642 in Kaifeng, Honan Province, China; over 300,000 people were killed. Lastly, there was a flood in 1948 in June at Foochow, China, over 3,500 people were killed. Also, we think this because their large yellow river, tends to overflow from flash flooding alot.
